This 3-session workshop is designed to introduce pre-teen and young teen girls to yoga and the benefits of a life-long yoga practice that go far beyond flexibility of the body! Today's young women are being asked to grow up very fast. This age period is full of physical and mental changes that can have a crucial impact on their later teen years and adult lives. Media and peer pressure are imposing images and standards that can be detrimental to a young woman's self-esteem and behavior. There are few resources out there today that teach girls the skills to look within themselves and learn to cope with external influences in a mature way that honors who they are now, how their choices affect themselves and others and their potential as women in the modern world.
Though many believe yoga is just a stretching routine, what it really teaches us is to look deep within and see that we are so much more than our external form. Yoga truly builds strength of mind and character in addition to strength of body. The tweens are a critical time of life to develop a healthy relationship with our bodies and yoga helps us do that. It teaches us that this healthy relationship requires not only taking care of our bodies but also taking responsibility for our minds and the kind of thoughts that race through them. Yoga is also a playful practice that builds courage, confidence, stamina and patience, all qualities we'd wish for our daughters. Ultimately, yoga teaches empowerment in a completely non-competitive environment, so girls can be all that they were created to be.
